This small Handwoven Bamboo Container is known as ‘Banchung' and is handcrafted and made in Bhutan by traditionally-skilled artisans. Indigenously produced in rural Bhutan, the diamond-patterned storage container is made of fine strips of Tula, a type of bamboo, which are pre-dyed using plant and vegetable inks produced at home. Its veritable display of magical colours, beautiful symmetrical patterns and intricate designs are symbolic of the Bhutanese society and culture.

The handwoven container consists of two halves, outer larger lid which fits comfortably into a smaller inner lid and squeezed together to close.

Traditionally it was used as a plate for food. Today it is still used by the Bhutanese people in rural Bhutan to carry cooked food, such as rice and meat during long journeys or when they are going to work in the fields.

The Bangchung can be used to store all your knick-knacks, jewellery and accessories, or as a decorative piece on the wall or on a cabinet/table. There is no limitation to what you can use it for. It will also make a unique gift for special occasions and for those with a taste of indigenous and traditional crafts.

Why not get one now and support this craft form and its artisan traditions, which is in danger of dying. Your purchase will also help support the artisans, providing sustainable income to the weavers.
