This hand-painted traditional Bhutanese mask in orange has been handmade in Bhutan. A unique and beautiful wall hanging to decorate those bare walls, the papier mache mask also makes a great gift idea for those with a new home.
The richly coloured hand-painted mask features an open mouth with sharp protruding teeth, a ‘crown’ of five skulls, a ‘third eye’ on its forehead and a golden beard. These masks symbolize saints and sages, protective deities and legendary personalities, and therefore often seen placed or painted outside houses in Bhutan to ward off evil spirits and negativity. The orange papier mache mask represents the wrathful protector deity, Mahakala. Larger versions of these masks are often used during religious festivals or 'Tshechus' (a colourful annual Buddhist festival) by dancers that perform a traditional dance style - called 'Cham'.
